Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, recently visited Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. During his visit, he announced that the US electric car manufacturer is poised to double its imports of components from India. Goyal emphasized the increasing significance of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

Expressing pride in the contributions of Indian professionals, Goyal highlighted the presence of Indian engineers and finance professionals in senior roles at Tesla. Despite missing the opportunity to meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Goyal conveyed his well wishes for Musk’s speedy recovery.

In a social media post, Goyal shared his impressions of the visit, commending the talented Indian professionals contributing to Tesla’s transformative journey in mobility. He also underscored the growing role of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla’s supply chain, noting the company’s plans to double its component imports from India.

Key Meetings and Engagements

Goyal’s visit to the United States included participation in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial meeting and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in San Francisco. He also engaged in bilateral discussions with Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong, focusing on deepening economic ties between India and Singapore.

During the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial meeting, Goyal met with US Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai to discuss trade-related matters. Additionally, he is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and representatives from various sectors to address trade barriers and promote investment and cooperation in technology and innovation.

A key focus of Goyal’s visit is the “India-USA Innovation Handshake Initiative,” co-chaired with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. This initiative aims to foster collaboration between India and the USA in emerging technologies, address regulatory challenges, and promote innovation and job growth.

Goyal’s itinerary includes interactions with CEOs, investors, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and the Indian diaspora. He will participate in an investors’ roundtable and engage with stakeholders from the technology, entrepreneurship, and academic communities in Silicon Valley.
