Redefining Medical Architecture: Dermavision Clinic
Situated on the outskirts of Cluj’s intra muros area, the Dermavision Clinic designed by Vlad Sebastian Rusu Architecture Office is nestled amidst a diverse architectural landscape, blending historical residences with modern complexes. Occupying a small corner plot between two streets of differing significance, the clinic replaces an existing ground floor house. Adjacent to the site lies the Water Mill’s Canal, a historical watercourse concealed behind gardens and houses, serving as a focal point for the project.
Design Objectives
The project aims to establish a medical facility specializing in dermatology, complemented by ambulatory and low hospitalization services, including a plastic surgery operating room. Despite spatial constraints, the design aspires to create a semipublic space along the Water Mill’s Canal, reimagining the relationship between urban architecture and watercourses.
Integrating Water and Architecture
In response to the site’s context and the desire to unveil the Water Mill’s Canal, the clinic occupies the plot corner with a respectful volume, harmonizing with neighboring structures. A public courtyard, bridging the gap between the clinic and the water, serves as a leisure space accessible during both medical center hours and beyond.
Contemporary Interpretation of Heritage
Contemporary architectural language intertwines with historical heritage, manifesting in elements like the portico that serves as a transition from street to courtyard. Noble materials such as Vratza bush-hammered limestone adorn the exterior, aging gracefully over time and lending the building a dignified presence. Metal frames subtly integrate with the stone façade, enhancing the cohesive architectural expression.
Interior Functionality
Internally, the clinic efficiently accommodates dermatology and plastic surgery functions, comprising patient areas, treatment rooms, surgical suites, and ancillary spaces. Rational spatial organization ensures seamless operation and user comfort while upholding the clinic’s medical objectives.
The Dermavision Clinic epitomizes a harmonious fusion of architectural innovation, historical sensitivity, and medical functionality, setting a new standard for healthcare architecture in Cluj and beyond.
