Rethinking Guest Bathrooms: A Harmonious Integration
The project to construct guest bathrooms and a storage room prompted a reevaluation of conventional approaches to these spaces. Situated within the premises of a historic house in Cuernavaca’s city center, the endeavor aimed to harmonize modern functionality with the property’s rich heritage. The initial challenge involved identifying an appropriate location, ultimately leading to the transformation of an underutilized area at the rear of the house into a vibrant garden space.
Embracing Nature’s Influence
A central aspect of the design focused on reconnecting the concrete slab with the earth, thereby moderating temperatures and revitalizing the surrounding garden. The construction of three partition walls delineated a triangular enclosure, enclosing two identically sized cells within. This spatial configuration not only optimized functionality but also fostered a sense of intimacy and enclosure within the garden setting.
Flexible Spatial Dynamics
Within the triangular pavilion, the cells housed essential bathroom functions, including a toilet, dressing area, and shower. Designed to adapt to user needs, the cells could expand or merge by folding doors, offering a dynamic and immersive spatial experience. This flexibility transformed the bathrooms into fluid, maze-like spaces where users could engage with their surroundings on multiple levels.
Integration with the Environment
In harmony with the natural surroundings, the design incorporated elements such as wooden columns, dim lighting, and brick flooring. Eschewing traditional drainage systems, wastewater from sinks and showers was carefully managed to return to the garden, reinforcing the symbiotic relationship between space and nature. This approach not only minimized environmental impact but also enhanced the sensory experience for users.
A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
Cuernavaca Guest Bathrooms epitomizes a fusion of tradition and innovation, blending modern functionality with respect for the historic context and natural environment. By challenging traditional design paradigms and embracing sustainable principles, the project offers a compelling vision for harmonious living spaces that prioritize both human comfort and environmental stewardship.
